Science Communication

Picture

Outreach

I am passionate about making science accessible for everyone, and regularly share my work with academic and non-academic audiences.

I currently work with the organization Skype-A-Scientist to connect with students around the world. I have delivered presentations and Q&A sessions about marine biology and being a scientist for hundreds of students of all ages in Canada, the US, Australia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

If you're interested in inviting me to speak with your students, please visit the Skype-A-Scientist page here or contact me directly!

Science Communication

Whether behind the camera or in front of it, I love finding new and creative ways to share cool science with academic and general audiences. Here you can find some of the talks and videos I've produced on both my colleagues' and my own work.
This year's Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution was fully virtual. While it's harder to connect with your audience with a pre-recorded talk, it's a whole lot easier to make it way over the top. Learn all about how sea cucumber fishing may impact tropical seagrass meadows (and how overrated fish are) in this talk on my first PhD chapter before I get a cease and desist letter from Last Week Tonight!

The Three Minute Thesis is an international science communication competition that challenges graduate students to present research in an engaging way for non-specialists. In 2019, I placed first in the Faculty of Science and second overall at Simon Fraser University. Check out this video for a quick summary of my first thesis chapter!
In 2019, I brought the camera underwater to spotlight work from my labmate in the Marine Ecology Lab at Simon Fraser University. This work was co-produced with Jillian Dunic and Helen Yan and placed in the top 15 entries in NSERC's Science, Action! initiative.
In 2017, I helped showcase work on bumblebees from the Macroecology and Conservation Lab at the University of Ottawa. This work was co-produced with Kathleen Watkins as a part of NSERC's Science, Action! initiative and also placed in the top 15 entries.
